Results from the LumaScope™ Published in the October Issue of JALA

October 1, 2010 – (Carlsbad, CA) The peer-reviewed manuscript on results from the LumaScope developed by Etaluma, Inc. has been published in the current October issue of JALA (Journal of the Association for Laboratory Automation). The paper outlines the approach taken by Etaluma in the conception and design of the LumaScope, an inexpensive, personal, inverted fluorescence microscope. One of the primary focuses was to use newly developed technology to produce a laboratory-grade device that was small and very easy to use. Also presented are some of the technical issues considered by the authors during its development. Qualitative and quantitative data on imaging capabilities and resolution of a first fully-developed LumaScope are shown. Images are comparable to a standard laboratory bench-top inverted fluorescence microscope (Nikon). The implications of the development of the LumaScope in terms of increased accessibility of fluorescence microscopy in laboratories and point-of-care medical clinics is discussed.
